Notes
Key recommendations
Increase access to information about settlement services, as well as how to access these service. These information should be made accessible even before arriving in Canada
Key findings
-
Around half of participants used at least one settlement service, with the highest occurrence being employment services and English language assessment
-
Use of settlement services tends to be after residing in Alberta for 5-6 months
-
Problems presented by participants with accessing services included low awareness, language barriers. Approximately half of participants indicated their source of information about living in Alberta was from government websites, with a clear preference for this.
-
Issues with obtaining Canadian employment include viewing foreign credentials unfavourably, little to no connections, as well as the need for Canadian experience when hired, though this difficulty is decreased in individuals in northern communities
