Future research / gaps identified:
Design, implement and evaluate culturally-appropriate parenting interventions for African immigrant parents that address cultural clashes
Key findings:
1) Conflicting cultural norms and values between Africa and Canada, particularly seen in “culture clashes” between parents and children
2) Juggling multiple responsibilities and more demands than in Africa
3) Lack of support and lack of access to services
4) Differences in what disciplinary actions parents are allowed to do in Canada vs. Africa
5) Being grateful for the opportunity to live in Canada and raise their children here
Location: Edmonton & Calgary, AB
Key populations: Sub-Saharan African immigrant parents who now live in either Edmonton or Calgary
Key recommendations:
1) Develop culturally acceptable parenting interventions and education for African immigrant parents
2) Create culturally appropriate policies to address the issues faced by African immigrant parents.
