CCIS’ language link for mainstream mental health project evaluation final report

Abstract
This report summarizes the evaluation work completed by Mindwise Communications between the period of September and November 2020 for the program: Language Link for Mainstream Mental Health. The intent of this report is to assist the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, CCIS, in making program improvements where necessary and to gather evidence of whether or not the provision of interpreter services to mental health services providers reduces client barriers.

Key findings

  • All respondents indicated that the program met expectations, in terms of learning to work with interpreters, increased comfort working with clients that are newcomers, and positive experiences with staff
  • Respondents indicated that the program will allow for increased reach, decreasing barriers for newcomers, and increased comfort working with patients.
  • Funding uncertainty of services relating to interpretation, as well as no experience with interpreters, may cause difficulty in using interpretation services
  • Access to services (i.e. distance to clinics) may present another barrier for newcomer clients
