Resilience within the context of refugee youth adaptation to new life in Canada

In response to recent refugee crises around the world, scholars have called for research on resilience among war-affected children and youth as an important area of focus that offers culturally and contextually relevant implications for effective support services. While empirical research on the resilience of refugee youth has been gradually increasing, the current scholarship still lacks social, cultural, and contextual sensitivity. As such, this dissertation research, which consists of three conceptually linked manuscripts, represents a purposeful attempt to address this gap by exploring the resilience of refugee youth in a postmigration Canadian context, with contributions to research, policy, and practice. Refugee youth were recruited from Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. Manuscript 1 centres on the definition of refugee youth resilience as it relates to postmigration resettlement and explores the theoretical connections between resilience and positive adaptation. This manuscript proposes a culturally and contextually relevant conceptualization of resilience from the bioecological lens, integrating the three intertwined developmental, acculturative, and psychological perspectives. Manuscript 2 focuses on a critical and extensive review of the extant literature on refugee children and youth. It synthesizes empirical evidence from scholarship on young refugees’ resilience and presents a host of biological, psychological, social and cultural determinants of resilience, which interact with one another across multiple levels of social and ecological contexts to determine adaptive responds to stressful experiences. Finally, Manuscript 3 reflects qualitative research on pathways leading to positive adaptation to a Canadian postmigration context to provide knowledge about the pathways leading to resilience among refugee youth. It outlines a classic grounded theory study that generated a substantive theory conceptually explaining the underlying process of positive adaptation from the perspectives of 15 Canadian refugee youth. Together, findings from this dissertation research spur integration of knowledge and strategies to inform practice and policies to mitigate risk and promote resilience in multiple systems that shape refugee youth adaptation over the resettlement course. Conceptualizing attitudes toward immigrants among undergraduate students attending a university in Southern Alberta

Canada is commended as a country that celebrates multicultural diversity; however, literature suggests that this may not universally be the case for individual Canadians. This research study utilizes the Social Dominance Orientation 7 scale (SDO7 scale) as well as an Immigrant Attitudes Measure with undergraduate students attending a university in Southern Alberta. Questionnaires and interviews were used to achieve the purpose of this research study: to examine the socio-demographic factors, perceptions, and beliefs held by Canadian-born undergraduate students attending a university in Southern Alberta and how these elements may influence SDO and attitudes held about immigrants by these students. Using thematic analysis, six themes were established from the interviews and non-parametric statistical testing was used to establish relationships between variables. As both a member of the Canadian host society and a second-generation immigrant, the researcher also uses journaling to report personal reflections gleaned during the interview process. Socioeconomic determinants of physical activity among adult Arab immigrants in Edmonton, Alberta

Little is known about leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) habits of Arab immigrants in Canada. LTPA has been linked to decreased risks for various disease, as well as increased life expectancy. Socioeconomic status has also been recognized as a significant factor affecting health and wellbeing. The socioeconomic determinants of LTPA, and which individual, social, and environmental factors contribute to LTPA participation for adult Arab immigrants in Edmonton, AB were examined. Around 40% of participants were physically active. Factors that were associated with increased LTPA included: higher educational degrees, higher income, occupations with less physical effort, and familiarity with the health benefits of LTPA. Findings from this research have the potential to design and implement targeted LTPA recommendations and interventions for Arab immigrants. Healthcare choices of Ghanian immigrants in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Many African immigrants moving to Canada tend to experience deterioration of health with time in their host country due to the influence of multiple factors on their health care decisions. The purpose of this study was to understand the problems and decision dynamics relevant to Ghanaian adult immigrants’ healthcare choices with the first five to ten years of arrival in Calgary, Alberta. This research used a qualitative naturalistic approach with ten Ghanaian adult immigrants. Thematic analysis revealed that participants’ healthcare choices were influenced by their pre-and post-migration experiences, which informed their pathways to care. Participants provided insights about tensions among themselves and with health providers in making healthcare choices as they settled in a new environment. Further, there is a need to provide health education programs and a strong supportive system to facilitate better health choices and encourage health care service use among recent newcomers. The lived experience and sense of place among family sponsored late-age Chinese immigrants in Edmonton

Place is powerful in our life because to be human is to be emplaced. In the human geographic interpretation of place, a conceptualization of the emplacement of human experience has been underdeveloped for a long time. This dissertation contributes to this area of inquiry by adopting a phenomenological case study approach to examine family sponsored late-age Chinese immigrants’ lived experience and sense of place in Edmonton, Canada. The focus of this study is to explore the relationship between late-age immigrants and their places at different scales. This work presents how the research participants develop a relationship with place based on their subjective perceptions and experiences. Two studies are presented in this dissertation. Theoretically, this research contributes to a scholarly understanding of the role of place in human life by establishing two frameworks to illustrate the relationships between participants and their places. Substantively, the research challenges the stereotype of sponsored late-age Chinese immigrants in Canada by revealing their roles and contributions in both their families and in society. An analysis of the barriers encountered in the teaching and learning of refugee youth through trauma informed practices

This qualitative study explored the multiple facets of the teaching and learning of youth from refugee backgrounds, many of whom are participating in specialized programming within the Calgary, Alberta area. In particular, this article presents data and discussion regarding some of the interwoven challenges encountered by youth, families, teachers, and administration when working with refugee youth. This study confirms that improvements are needed in areas such as teaching strategies, teacher training, school inclusive practices, and systematic utilization of community services. Teachers also expressed the need to combat ongoing prejudice at the peer, teacher, and administrative level. Implications for policy and practice are discussed. Concerning labour markets and the commodification of social difference in the Alberta oil sands

In this thesis, I consider ethnographic conversations I had during fieldwork in Fort McMurray and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 2016 with two sets of workers: Albertan trades-workers employed in the oil sands (pipe-fitters, welders and boilermakers) and Filipino/a Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) employed in the local service sector (cooks, caregivers and kitchen helpers). I analyse these workers’ self-reflections on their own work routines as providing a sightline into the ways labour market processes and regulatory frameworks are manifest in and negotiated through their lives. I suggest this is of broader significance for our understanding of the ways state-regulated labour markets re-fashion, and are re-fashioned by, the cultural identities of workers. Migrant Social Workers’ Experiences of Professional Adaptation in Alberta Canada: A Comparative Gender Analysis

There is limited global research addressing the professional adaptation of migrant social workers in general, and a dearth of scholarship specific to the unique context in Alberta, Canada. While academic attention on the broad topic of professional migration of social workers has gained some traction over the past decade, the emerging literature has so far lacked a comparative gender analysis of the experiences of professional migration among social workers. The purpose of the present study was to develop enhanced understanding of the experiences of professional adaptation of migrant social workers in the Albertan context through a comparative gender analysis. This dissertation emerged from my involvement as a research assistant on a national study on the professional adaptation of migrant social workers in Canada. While coordinating data collection for the Alberta site of the national study, I conducted in-depth interviews with 17 male and female migrant social workers that had migrated to Alberta, Canada within the past decade. From these 17 interviews, 10 transcripts of interviews were selected as cases for secondary analysis in order to answer the question: How do female and male migrant social workers in Alberta experience their professional adaptation to practice in their new context? The research method employed in the secondary study was interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), a form of qualitative inquiry that examines how people make sense of significant lived experiences. Intersectionality theory and postcolonial feminisms provided the theoretical framework for the study, facilitating attention to both the macro-level factors that structure lived experiences and interactions, and the micro-level processes and interpretations that shape social identities. Engaging with the detailed personal accounts of the participants provided new understandings of how male and female migrant social workers both similarly and differentially interpret and make meaning out of their experiences of professional adaptation. The study makes an important contribution to existing knowledge about professional adaptation in the context of transnational labour mobility. Notably, it is among the first studies to explore the professional adaptation processes of migrant social workers in Alberta, as well as among the earliest works to engage in a qualitative comparative gender analysis that explores these experiences. Vulnerabilities and strengths in parent-adolescent relationships in Bangladeshi immigrant families in Alberta

This study investigated the challenges and parent-adolescent relationship factors that contribute to resilience and the successful adjustment of Bangladeshi families following immigration to Canada. The systems framework of family resilience (Walsh, 2006) was used to interpret how Bangladeshi immigrant adolescents and parents experienced and navigated immigration challenges. Using a qualitative approach, four adolescent girls and four parents of adolescents were interviewed to inquire into their experience of challenges related to adolescent development, the immigrant experiences, and parent-adolescent relationships influencing their post-immigration adjustment. Immigrant adolescents faced language and cultural barriers, bullying and discrimination in their school environment while rituals, customs and values from their culture of origin diminished. They felt pressured by their parent’s career expectations and felt they suffered gender discrimination in the family. Parents faced economic and career challenges and a difficult parenting experience. Optimism about the future, parental encouragement, mutual empathy of each other’s struggles, sharing feelings, open and clear communication, flexibility in parenting style and anchoring in cultural values and religious beliefs helped parents and adolescents become more resilient in maintaining a positive outlook with a positive view of their immigration. In some cases, the challenges of immigration pulled the families closer together in mutual support. It is hoped that findings from this study will assist in developing effective social programmes to ease adolescents’ and parents’ transitions among immigrants and to promote resiliency in immigrant families.
