Key findings
People who were born abroad and referred for in-country surveillance after migration were more likely to be diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. That were all non-referrals and non-referrals from high risk countries. Referrals had a roughly 80% decreased risk of transmitting TB and did not result in any secondary cases.

Key recommendations
Canada should follow the UK example and undertake TB screening for latent tuberculosis infection in individuals from countries with high rates of TB. More research is needed to understand who is at higher risk of developing and transmitting TB. There is a need for investment in TB control in countries of origin.
