Future research / gaps identified: Urge change at a broader level above just Edmonton Public Schools, such as provincial changes in curriculum, professional development for teachers, public safety initiatives and hate crimes.
Key findings:
-
Race-based data allows the district to identify gaps in the delivery of education, which in turn will lead to the development of better programming to ensure student success.
-
In September 2020, Edmonton Public Schools became the first school jurisdiction in Alberta to commit to collecting race-based data.
-
We do not have the data to better target interventions based on varying intersections, such as socioeconomics, race, and other factors. Many families are experiencing poverty—including refugee, Indigenous, and newcomer students and those from lower socio-economic areas that have disproportionately racialized populations.
-
Systemic racism is prevalent in education budgets.
-
Staffing and leadership is not representative of the diverse student body.
Integration timeline: Not defined
Key recommendations:

-
