Key findings:
-
Existing settlement and integration services largely do not meet the needs of LGBTQ2S+ newcomers to Calgary, especially SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression) refugees.
-
Trauma-informed settlement services that are specifically tailored to the unique, intersectional experiences of queer and trans newcomers is greatly needed.
-
Dr. Tonya Callaghan at the University of Calgary, in partnership with the Centre for Newcomers, is starting the research project Over the Overseas Rainbow: The Development of an Intersectional Training Initiative to support LGBTQ+ Newcomers to Canada.
