The Family Conflict Prevention Program provides culturally-sensitive family violence services and supports in 13 different languages. The Community Readiness for Building Newcomer Belonging project is an opportunity for municipalities to learn about key strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in services and various challenges for newcomers are identified in this report through the lens of the newcomer journey and sense of belonging framework.
Key strengths, weaknesses, and gaps are identified in this report through the lens of the newcomer journey and how the community and newcomers contribute to developing a sense of belonging. Opportunities identified by the community, through review of existing literature and observation were also compiled. Several continuums were included to provide insight into possible steps forward to improve welcoming and belonging and help the town of Drumheller as it continued to attract and retain newcomers. Through focus groups with educators working with newcomer children, this study asked: 1) For newcomer families, what are indicators of quality in early learning and child care?, and 2) What are the essential dispositions child care educators demonstrate that meet the needs of newcomer children and families? 5 key themes were identified, including language barriers and tensions, the need for flexibility, and how educators can grow, seek and co-learn with newcomer families. Referral processes are central to ensuring that newcomer clients are connected with appropriate programming and service offerings to support their settlement, integration, and overall wellbeing. These processes involve referring clients from one agency to another based on their specific needs and circumstances. However, the effectiveness of referral processes in Alberta is influenced by a variety of factors, including agency capacity, confidentiality concerns, and the ad hoc nature of follow-up on referrals. This report discusses major barriers to the referral process between Albertan immigrant serving agencies, as well as recommendations for improvement. In response to the specific challenges faced by culturally diverse families with family violence concerns and Children’s Services involvement, CCIS created the Cultural Brokerage Program team and the Culturally Responsive Accommodations for Family Violence program for male perpetrators of family violence. The program is a promising practice as it is: effective, efficient, sustainable, innovative, and different from existing programs. Beginning in April, 2020, The Immigrant Education Society conducted an internal study on staff and student reactions to the transition to remote services delivery precipitated by the COVID19 Pandemic. This consists of a preliminary survey deployed by the Research and Program Development Department, and the compilation of independently developed surveys deployed in June by the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) department and the Human Resources department. The analysis of the raw survey data was conducted by the Research and Program Development department. This document encompasses results from the Human Resources and LINC surveys.
